In the twelfth round of Graduate Student Life Grants, 17 new proposals out of the total 23 submitted were offered funding by the Office of Graduate Education. 11.03: ART AND OCEAN EXCHANGE: AN EXPERIMENT IN COMMUNICATING SCIENCE THROUGH ART

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute students team up with local artists to create works of art based on their research. The results will be displayed at the Cape Cod Art Association in a dedicated exhibit, and a special reception will be held.

RFP12.01: INVERTEBRATE SOCIAL HOUR

Course 9 and Course 7 bring together labs across disciplines that are involved in invertebrate research, for the purposes of socializing and building research connections. It aims to introduce researchers with common interests who might not otherwise meet.

RFP12.02: SKYDIVE SATURDAYS

The MIT Skydiving Club organizes trips for students that are interested in trying skydiving. Students pay the dive fee, but the club handles all logistics, transportation, and food.  There are also reunion events for participants to reconnect, meet other MIT students, and meet members of outdoor-activities  groups at MIT.

A large-scale Superbowl party at a spacious, upscale venue in Central Square.

RFP12.06: TREE.ST/MIT

Multiple small tea + cookie events are hosted to give students who are connected via a common interest a reason to meet in person, in support of Tree.st/MIT, a new platform for connecting MIT students who have shared hobbies, interests, or research who might not otherwise meet.

RFP12.08: URBAN CYCLING CLINIC

Organizes social bike rides that allow participants to make new connections, and runs a workshop on urban cycling skills and safety lead by Nicole Freedman (Boston bike czar, Olympian, former MIT cycling coach).  Participants receive a free set of bike lights or have an option to buy them. Workshop to be held in early May, date TBD.

Teams of Sloan students and engineering students work together to consult for businesses and initiatives in the local community. This project connects students on each team, and underlines the important connection between  MIT and the larger city of Cambridge.

RFP12.11: POST-PROPOSAL PEER SUPPORT

This project brings post-proposal Ph.D students together in a structured curriculum designed to provide advice, peer feedback, encourage students to reach their goals, and an emotional support network as they work through the challenges and stresses of completing a thesis and finishing grad school.

The MIT climbing club hosts free yoga classes followed by healthy snacks (open to everyone, not just climbers).  This provides an opportunity for physical activity, meeting other graduate students, and raising interest in the opportunities for climbing at MIT.
