Interdisciplinary CCSE PhD Program:

The CCSE PhD program is an interdisciplinary program that collaborates with eight affiliated departments. Applicants who wish to apply for the Interdisciplinary CCSE PhD Program should also complete the application associated with the degree type.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) – Optional

For International applicants:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

• Minimum score required: 7
• Electronic scores send to: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Graduate
• Current scores only; scores must be less than 2 years old by the application deadline

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

• iBT Minimum score: 100 (iBT) or 5 (iBT26)

Duolingo English Test (DET)

• Minimum score required: 135
• Electronic scores send to: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Graduate Admissions
• Current scores only; scores must be less than 2 years old by the application deadline

Department ELP Waiver Policy

CSE and CCSE require demonstrated English Language Proficiency from all applicants, but applicants may request a waiver for the English language test requirement if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

• English is/was the language of instruction in your four-year undergraduate program
• English is the language of your employer/workplace for at least the last four years
• English was your language of instruction in both primary and secondary schools

ELP waivers can only be requested directly in the application on the Test Scores Instructions page. Do not request an ELP waiver via email; emailed requests may not receive a response. The last day to request an ELP waiver is November 30.

Test Score Verification

All test scores shared with MIT must be verified by the testing agency in order to be reviewed. If you do not see your score verification status change upon submission, you may request assistance with test score verification in your application status portal. While valid scores must be self-reported in your application by the application deadline, all test scores must be verified by December 1 in order to receive an offer of admission.

The Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) PhD program allows students to specialize at the doctoral level in a computation-related field of their choice through focused coursework and a doctoral thesis. Applications from candidates who have a strong foundation in core disciplinary areas of mathematics, engineering, physics, or related fields are strongly encouraged.
