Loza Tadesse
Professor Tadesse’s leadership statement
“My leadership is rooted primarily in mentorship within my lab, across collaborations, and in my engagements in the broader MIT community. I do not see leadership as authority, but as responsibility for creating spaces where people can grow, ask bold questions, and discover what they are truly capable of. Leading with care matters to me because I believe every human being carries hidden light. There is potential, creativity, and strength inside each person that may simply need the right environment to emerge. When people feel seen and valued as whole individuals, they flourish, and the success of the team becomes a natural outcome of individual growth. What brings me the most joy is witnessing that “aha” moment, the spark in someone’s eyes when they grasp a new idea or step into confidence they did not know they had. I hope to continue growing into this ideal more fully each year, striving to embody it with greater intention and consistency over time.
The mentorship I received throughout my academic journey shaped not only my path, but also the way I understand connection and leadership. My peer and advisor mentors had a gift for recognizing strengths in me that were still unfolding. They gently but consistently encouraged me to think bigger, to stretch beyond what felt comfortable, and to trust my ability to take on meaningful challenges.
What has stayed with me most is how they illuminated possibility. That warmth and quiet confidence helped me see my own light more fully. It taught me that true mentorship is not about strictly directing someone’s path, but about helping them recognize their strength and encouraging them to walk forward with greater clarity and courage.”
