Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT)

TOEFL iBT Instructions

Applicants may submit TOEFL iBT scores to fulfill the English language proficiency test requirement in their application(s).

The TOEFL iBT exam fee is charged in local currency and varies by country. To register for the TOEFL, please visit www.ets.org.


Score Reporting

Send your TOEFL iBT scores to MIT GradAdmissions using institutional code 3514. Be advised: codes for the MIT Sloan School of Management may vary.


Minimum score requirements

GradAdmissions recommends a minimum score of at least 100, however each department has its own minimum score requirement for TOEFL.

Department minimum score requirements supersede GradAdmissions recommended minimum score.

Check for the specific requirements of the graduate program that interests you by navigating to their information page from the Degree Programs directory.


TOEFL restrictions

MIT GradAdmissions does not accept the following test score types offered by ETS:

  • TOEFL MyBest
  • TOEFL Essentials
  • TOEFL ITP scores

Official scores for the tests listed above cannot be sent to MIT via ETS. If you are requested to provide TOEFL MyBest, Essentials, or ITP scores, you will be contacted directly with instructions.


General test policies

Applicants whose primary language is not English or who did not receive an undergraduate degree from an English-speaking institution in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, or the United States must submit official test scores from an an accepted English language proficiency (ELP) test provider. Read more about this requirement here.

Graduate programs reserve the right to request supplemental ELP test scores during the course of application evaluations regardless of English proficiency level.
