GRE Instructions
Depending on the program that interests you, official GRE scores may or may not be required for admission. Each academic department determines its own policy regarding the GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. Please check the Degree Programs directory for more information about the program’s specific requirements for the GRE exam.
The entrance fee for the GRE General Test costs $220 in most countries. Further information about GRE fees can be found online. To register for the GRE, please visit www.ets.org/gre. When submitting your test scores to MIT, please use Institution Code 3514; codes for the Sloan School of Management may vary.
Score Reporting
MIT GradAdmissions advises that applicants plan to take any standardized tests as early as possible as verification processing time varies widely. All self-reported scores will need to be verified before the department deadline set by your program of interest.
Send your GRE scores to MIT using institutional code 3514. Be advised: codes for the MIT Sloan School of Management may vary.
Minimum score requirement
There is no minimum score requirement for the GRE; scores are reviewed as a part of a holistic evaluation process.
Check for the specific requirements of the graduate program that interests you by navigating to their information page from the Degree Programs directory.
GRE Home Edition
MIT GradAdmissions encourages applicants to take the GRE at a testing center if possible. If you are unable to take the exam at a testing center due to extenuating circumstances (for example, if there are no open testing centers in your region), you may take the GRE Home Edition.
General test policies
Departments determine their own GRE requirements. More instructions can be found directly in the application on the Test Scores Instructions page. The general policy information can be found below.
GRE Required
Applicants applying to departments that require GRE scores will not be able to submit their application(s) until scores are reported on the Test Scores page of the application.
GradAdmissions only requires applicants to submit self-reported (unofficial) scores at the time of submission, but all GRE test scores must be verified by the test provider in order for your application to be reviewed by your department of interest.
Be advised, any test scores submitted on one application will be visible on any other applications of programs that require GRE scores or give you the option to list GRE scores.
GRE Optional
If your program of interest lists the GRE as optional, you are not required to submit GRE test scores in order to submit your application, but you may do so if you believe your scores bolster your application.
Be advised, any scores listed will be considered application materials for review by committee.
GRE not accepted
If your program of interest does not accept GRE scores, they will not consider GRE scores in the evaluation of your application. If you have shared your scores in other applications, these scores will not be visible.
