Welcome to MIT! We are excited to welcome you to the MIT community.
Graduate students make a vital contribution to the Institute’s wide-ranging activities, from innovative research to vibrant community-building.
Whether you’re considering your options or planning to enroll as an incoming student, we know that there’s a lot on your mind. Below, you can find essential resources and information to get you started.
If you have questions, we’re here to help. Please reach out to us with questions about any of the content on these pages, and connect with your department about other topics on your mind.
For admitted students considering MIT
We hope you’ll choose to join our thriving, diverse community. As you weigh your options, here’s an introduction to several of the supports and resources that exist for all MIT graduate students.
Accepting, declining, or deferring your offer
Please note that each department has an individual timeline for announcing admissions decisions. If you have questions regarding your application status, please consult the application system (if applicable) and the department website.
To accept, decline, or request a deferral of your admission offer, please follow instructions from your department offered when you receive an offer of admission.
More than half of MIT’s graduate programs require applicants to respond via the Application Status page in the application system; if you see a Reply To Offer form on your Status page, please respond there.
If you must complete a reply form outside of the application system, please follow directions from your intended department to submit your form. Other graduate programs prefer that you complete the MIT Graduate Admissions Reply Form or a separate reply form.
If you would like to request a deferral of your admission offer, please consult the department policies to see if deferrals are accepted in that program.
Replies to an admission offer must be received by or on April 15. If you have received an offer of admission and do not respond by or on April 15, it is assumed that you have declined the offer.
Requesting readmission to MIT
If you wish to resume a degree program interrupted by absence of one or more terms (not counting the summer term), please fill out the MIT Readmission Application. For work leading to another degree in the same department or to a degree in another department, contact the department and submit a new application.
If you withdrew from your program one year ago or more, you will need to pay a readmission fee of $75.
For incoming students
To help you navigate your way to Cambridge, we have organized essential tasks and information in two places:
- A checklist of to-do items in your Atlas App! Please download the latest version of the Atlas application on mobile or desktop to access your onboarding tile. You can find the latest version by visiting apps.mit.edu. For any questions please contact the graduate administrator for your department.
- Brief introductions to must-know campus information in the Canvas module “Grad Student Orientation.”
To access Canvas and Atlas, you’ll need to set up your MIT Kerberos email address.
Important notice regarding final transcripts
We advise all students to contact their department for next steps as they prepare to arrive on campus for the Fall 2024 semester, including submission of the final transcript for Spring 2024. We respect decisions regarding the adoption of Pass/No Record (or Credit/No Credit or Pass/Fail) and other grading options during the unprecedented period of COVID-19 disruptions, whether those decisions were made by institutions or by individual students.
A full list of programs and department contact information is listed online. For all other admissions questions or concerns, please contact Graduate Admissions at gradadmissions@mit.edu or 617-324-6730.
Graduate Orientation
Graduate orientation events take place in late August and early September. Each year, events are posted to the Graduate Student Orientation website.
We look forward to welcoming you to campus!
