Iwnetim Abate
Professor Abate’s leadership statement
“I try to lead with the same lesson that the rock represents to me: the importance of a strong foundation. Structures built on rock are steady and enduring, able to stand the test of time, while those built on sand often struggle to withstand challenges. In the same way, I believe mentorship should focus on helping students build deep and lasting foundations.
As a faculty member and research group leader, my circles of influence include my research group, collaborators across MIT, and the broader graduate community through teaching and mentorship. In these spaces, I aim to create an environment where students feel supported both intellectually and personally as they navigate the highs and lows of research.
My goal is to help students cultivate strong scientific thinking as well as qualities such as humility, resilience, and perspective. The relationships and experiences students develop during graduate school can shape them far beyond their time at MIT. I hope that through mentorship and community, students can grow holistically and carry these foundations with them so they can lead thriving, meaningful, and fruitful lives long after MIT.”
