IELTS/TOEFL Waivers:
The IELTS/TOEFL requirement can be waived by the department under one of the following circumstances:
- If the applicant has received instruction in English in primary and secondary school or university
- If the applicant has been working in the U.S. for two years and/or will have received a degree from an American institution before entering MIT
If the applicant meets either of the above criteria the waiver will automatically be applied to their application and test scores will not need to be submitted.
Application, Statement of Objectives, and Portfolio:
Applicants must specify up to three research groups with whom they are applying to work. Please include this information at the top of the statement of objectives and in the “Research Groups of Interest” section of the online application.
Some research groups require the submission of a portfolio of relevant work, and most other groups will accept such portfolios for consideration. Consult the applicant information webpages of the research groups you are applying to for specific requirements. Read more about portfolio requirements here.
Any other supplemental materials should be submitted using the online application system as well; paper documents are not accepted.
