HASTS doctoral students are normally guaranteed to have six academic years of financial support provided that the student maintains reasonable academic progress. For the first five years, this covers MIT tuition, twelve months of stipend, and twelve months of individual student health insurance annually. A nine-month fellowship for dissertation completion, including tuition and insurance, if needed and if academic standing has been maintained, is available for a sixth year. Funding is provided through a combination of fellowships (including those that students earn on their own), teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
All students are also welcome to seek competitive outside funding at any point in their program, and typically have a good success rate with applications for external grants and fellowships. More information is provided at the time of admission.
