Who is required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge English Qualification?
International students whose first language is not English are required to submit official TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge English Qualification scores (MIT prefers IELTS). U.S. citizens and permanent residents do not take these exams.

The Economics Department will waive the English language exam requirement for international non-native speakers of English who have spent three or more years studying in an accredited school or university where English is the language of instruction. If you fulfill this criteria, you will have the option to request to waive the exam on the online application under the section “Test Scores.”

TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years, while Cambridge English scores do not expire. TOEFL or IELTS scores that expire while an application is under review will be considered valid.

Scholarship offers include full tuition for the academic year, twelve-month individual health insurance, and a stipend/salary to cover living expenses for the nine-month academic year. Continuation of financial aid for years two through five is dependent on satisfactory academic progress. In the third through fifth year, financial aid typically takes the form of a Teaching or Research Assistantship.

Please note, however, that the department may not have sufficient financial resources to fund all admitted graduate students. Please visit the Economics website for additional information.

Applicants are required to complete the Subjects Taken section of the online application. Please list economics and mathematics courses only. Group courses by subject area, and complete each column.

You may upload a resume or CV electronically to your application. Hard copies sent via post will not be accepted. Official copies of transcripts should be scanned and uploaded to your online application. We don’t require original official transcripts until after a student has been admitted to the department.

If you’re admitted to the program, we’ll require you to have an official copy of your transcript(s) sent to us from the university’s registrar. When necessary, please have records translated into English. Any discrepancy between the scanned transcripts and official transcripts may result in a rejection or withdrawal of our admission offer.
