UPDATE: The deadlines for application fee waiver requests have changed. Please review the new deadline information below.
Due to the high volume of fee waiver requests, the Office of Graduate Education is extending our fee waiver deadline slightly to accommodate more applicant requests. Please read the fee waiver deadlines below carefully.
- Fee waiver requests are due by November 19 for all programs with a December 1 application deadline
- Fee waiver requests are due by December 2 for all programs with a December 15 application deadline
- Fee waiver requests for Architecture, CRE, DEDP, and SCM are due by December 15
Graduate program application deadlines vary; please follow instructions for the specific program(s) to which you will apply. Information on all program deadlines can be found at our Degree Programs directory.
If you are submitting applications that have different deadlines, the Office of Graduate Education recommends you request your fee waiver in accordance with your earliest application deadline.
Requesting a Fee Waiver
NOTE: Emails asking for a fee waiver do not constitute a formal request and will not be reviewed.
When to Request a Fee Waiver
Fee waivers must be requested via our Application Fee Waiver Form, which opens for most graduate programs in September of each year. Do not submit your application(s) until after you receive a decision on your fee waiver. Please review the deadlines to submit an application fee waiver above.
Please allow 5 business days to receive a decision on your fee waiver request. Due to the high volume of requests we receive, we cannot guarantee a response sooner. If your fee waiver request is approved, the Office of Graduate Education will notify you by email. Please note: The Office of Graduate Education will be closed for Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 27 through Friday, November 29.
Conditions for submitting a fee waiver request
Approved fee waivers are applied automatically to eligible applications. Please follow the instructions below to ensure that your application fee waiver is applied properly.
Fee waivers can only be applied after an application has been started but before an application is submitted. A fee waiver will not be retroactively applied to an application that has been submitted. If the program deadline passes, or if you submit your application, we cannot refund or waive the fee.
You must submit a request for a fee waiver for your existing applications only. Approved fee waivers for applications that have not been started will not be applied.
The Office of Graduate Education will grant up to three fee waivers per applicant.
When submitting the Application Fee Waiver Form:
- Please make sure that your name on the form matches the name on your graduate application(s).
- Please include valid documentation to support your request.
Certification
When submitting an application fee waiver request form, you certify that the information provided is accurate and truthful to the best of your knowledge. Should any information or documentation provided within your request be found to be knowingly inaccurate or falsified at any point, you understand that MIT reserves the right to deny your waiver request, rescind any waivers that may have been granted, and require a written explanation of any misrepresentations of information, which may become part of your application record and may be considered in connection with any admissions decisions.
Application Fee Waiver Eligibility
The Office of Graduate Education is pleased to offer application fee waivers to applicants who meet the criteria described below.
For questions about the application fee waiver process, please email Graduate Admissions at gradadmissions@mit.edu. Emails sent to other staff members at the Office of Graduate Education will not receive a response.

Types of Fee Waivers
Fee waivers are given to applicants in an effort to support the mission of the GradDiversity in the Office of Graduate Education. Eligible Fellowship programs or Event/Conferences not listed below will align with the mission of GradDiversity. All organizations written in as “Other” will be vetted and assessed for alignment.
Financial Hardship
Applicants with U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status must demonstrate proof of financial hardship in the last twelve (12) months. This may take the form of receiving significant need-based financial aid, earning an income that meets the federal or local standard for low-income households, or enrolling in public assistance programs.
Some examples of valid documentation may include:
- FAFSA Student Aid Report that includes your Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
- Verification letter from financial aid officer at your most recent institution
- Financial aid billing statement of need-based aid
- Recent income statements*
- Income verification letter from current employer

NOTE: Please redact any sensitive information, such as your address, Social Security Number, or tax ID, from personal documents.
International Applicants with Financial Hardship
Unfortunately, the Office of Graduate Education cannot consider fee waiver requests solely on the basis of financial hardship for our international applicants. Because the Institute is located in the U.S., MIT relies on evidence from applicants of their use of economic intervention policies, based on the American federal poverty level, to assess financial hardship.
While we understand and are sensitive to global economic hardships, we cannot assess the measure for financial hardship for countries other than the U.S. At this time, we will not consider international applicants request for fee waivers on the basis of financial hardship
