Denials of further registration

Each term, the Graduate Academic Performance Group (GAPG) evaluates the academic progress of each graduate student. Upon notice from the department or program, and concurrence by the GAPG, of a student’s failure to make satisfactory progress toward degree objectives, the student may be denied permission to continue. Normally, such an action is preceded by a formal letter of warning from the Vice Chancellor and/or from the student’s department or program, which demands substantial improvement in performance. The Vice Chancellor’s warning is usually preceded by a “U” grade for thesis research, or a pattern of unacceptable academic or research performance. A denial of further registration may also be recommended by the Committee on Discipline based on its investigation of a complaint of unacceptable behavior, for example, plagiarism, harassment, or other nonprofessional conduct.

Students who have been denied registration may not register for further academic units or participate in the academic life of the Institute as a student.

International students who have been denied registration should speak with the International Students Office as this could affect visa status.

Students living in on-campus housing who have been denied registration will be required to terminate their housing contract and should contact the Graduate and Family Housing Office at
