Mia Hines-Shanks has experimented with various interests but found her place in Computer Science. Mia is a rising senior at Grinnell College pursuing a Computer Science major and Statistics minor. She has obtained rigorous IT internships, attended competitive summer fellowships and programs, and developed award-winning projects. Last summer, she worked in the Human-Computer Interaction lab at Brown University on a project focusing on computational handwriting. Currently, she is working in the MIT Media Lab. Her project focuses on configuring statistics about environmental hazards occurring in prisons: the information will go directly to activists to influence policy change. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field. Her research interests align with societal computing. Mia hopes her research will be focused on using technology to solve complex social issues or systematic problems.
