Biography
Sofia Belisário Costa is a rising third-year Stamps Scholar at the University of Miami, where she is majoring in Chemical Engineering. Born and raised in rural Brazil, surrounded by the Atlantic Rainforest, she developed a deep commitment to sustainable technological development for vulnerable communities—a mission that has guided her journey ever since.
Her passion for research began in high school, when she left her hometown to attend a federal research institute on her own. That experience propelled her to move abroad to pursue a research career. Now at the University of Miami, Sofia conducts research at the Aerosol and Air Quality Research Laboratory, where she focuses on aerosol-based nanomaterial synthesis and its applications in electrochemistry for environmental remediation.
Beyond the lab, Sofia is a dedicated advocate for Latin American representation, serving as a member of the Council of International Students and the Brazilian Student Association. She is also actively involved in the Environment, Sustainability, and Government Honor Society, reflecting her commitment to making environmental causes a priority. In her free time, she enjoys swimming and expresses her creativity through painting with oil pastels.
