Biography

Miles Walker is a rising senior (class of 2027) and a cybersecurity major at Hampton University. He has held a passion for technology for most of his life and later developed a secondary interest in social justice and law. As he delved into research and coursework at his university, these two passions evolved into a deep fascination with human-computer interaction and sociotechnical systems. Through his research, he aims to better understand how various aspects of computing, such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, can be leveraged for societal good.

His past research experience includes an internship with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the summer of 2024. Here, he completed a rigorous research project under the NICE (formerly the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education) Program Office within the agency’s Information Technology Laboratory. His research examined the role of human factors in enterprise cybersecurity breaches by conducting real-world case studies and identifying key managerial oversights. At the end of the program, Miles presented his work to an audience of NIST staff and fellow interns. Beyond this program, Miles has conducted research within his department at Hampton on topics such as algorithmic bias in the hiring process. Last spring, he also had the opportunity to present at The Association of Computer Science Departments at Minority Institutions (ADMI)’s annual research symposium. As he nears the end of his undergraduate journey, Miles plans to continue his studies by pursuing a PhD.

Outside of research, Miles is a member of the Freddye T. Davy Honors College, a tutor and teaching assistant, and a Ron Brown Leaders Network Captain. Additionally, he recently founded PhD Pathways, a campus organization aimed at supporting prospective PhD students. In his free time, he enjoys gaming, cooking, working out, and listening to music.
