Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) Design Fellowship

The MAD Design Fellowship supports a cohort of continuing MIT graduate students—Master’s or PhD candidates—whose work engages design in research, practice, or both. Fellows receive full tuition for one or two semesters, a monthly stipend, health insurance, and a scholarly allowance to support materials, fieldwork, or travel. In return, they join a lively cross-disciplinary community exploring the evolving role of design in research, education, and society.

Current MIT graduate students (Master’s or PhD) from any school or department are eligible. Design is broadly defined as a creative process that considers human and social impacts. Successful applicants articulate how their work uses or reflects on design, for whom, and toward what end. A central question for all proposals is: Who benefits from this work, and how?

Deadline: January

Tata Center for Technology and Design Fellowship

The Tata Center for Technology and Design, part of the MIT Energy Initiative, was founded in 2012 to find new ways of using science and technology to bring the benefits of modernity to resource-constrained communities in the developing world, particularly those in India.

The Center seeks applications to support MIT graduate students via endowed Tata fellowships for work on projects aimed at developing appropriate, practical solutions for resource-constrained communities, working closely with on-the-ground collaborators. Preference will be given to proposals with direct community impact and stakeholder engagement in India.

Successful projects will use technology and/or business models creatively to overcome constraints and thereby create opportunity and support quality of life improvements at all levels of society in India and other parts of the world where poverty and competition for limited resources limit economic growth and opportunity. Projects addressing energy, agriculture, health, housing, water, and environment are of interest, though other areas will also be considered.

Deadline: May
