|MIT Department: Chemistry
Status: PhD Student
My name is Lindsey Backman, and I am originally from Tampa, FL. I attended the University of Florida, where I received my B. S. in Chemistry and a minor in Classical Studies, and I am now a third year Chemistry graduate student working in Prof. Cathy Drennan’s lab. My research focuses on structurally characterizing enzymes prominent in the human gut microbiome, and I am particularly interested in identifying new antibiotic targets and better understanding the biochemical role which commensal bacteria play in human health. When I’m not in lab, I like to dance (I’m one of the few grad students in MIT DanceTroupe), cook, eat, be with dogs, and watch Shonda Rhimes shows.
