The Office of Graduate Education (OGE) and Career Advising and Professional Development (CAPD) are thrilled to welcome three new staff members who will support the MIT graduate student population: Liz Guttenberg, Elsie Otero, and Leo Savala.
Liz Guttenberg, OGE
Elizabeth “Liz” Guttenberg will join the Office of Graduate Education as assistant dean for GradSupport on November 22, 2021. In her role, she will provide individual support to graduate students on matters related to academic and personal well-being; collaborate with departments and offices that serve graduate students; and support graduate student-centered activities and programs. Elsie Otero, CAPD
As the new assistant director for graduate student professional development in CAPD, Elsie Otero supports initiatives for master’s and PhD students. Her experience includes over 15 years in higher education, with a primary emphasis on professional development. She holds a master’s degree in higher education administration from Baruch College and a bachelor’s degree in history from Union College. Contact Elsie at eotero@mit.edu.
Leo Savala, OGE
Leonard “Leo” Savala PhD recently joined OGE’s GradDiversity team as associate dean. He brings a wealth of experience in higher ed, including establishing the first Office of Multicultural Student Engagement at Wayne State University. Leo will focus on efforts to advance diversity, promote a climate of belonging, and contribute to scholar development and retention efforts in MIT’s graduate degree programs, in particular for underrepresented minority groups.
