The Office of Graduate Education is delighted to announce that Leonard “Leo” Savala, PhD, will join the Office of Graduate Education as Associate Dean on Friday, October 1, 2021.
As Associate Dean, Leo will lead the GradDiversity team in their initiatives to advance diversity, promote a climate of belonging, and contribute to scholar development and retention efforts in MIT’s graduate degree programs, in particular for underrepresented minority groups. This will include oversight of staff for signature programs such as the MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP), Grad Catalyst, and the University Center of Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM).
Leo will bring his expertise to bear on creating strategic partnerships and building external relationships with institutions and organizations, and engaging alumni in helping MIT to achieve diversity goals. He will also work with our team as we bring a new focus to fundraising.
Leo comes to us with nearly two decades of experience in higher education, most recently from Wayne State University in Michigan, where he established its first Office of Multicultural Student Engagement. His professional experience spans programming, evaluation, budget and administrative work, as well as research and teaching at both the undergraduate and doctoral level.
