Conflict Management@MIT offers a three-tiered conflict management training for all MIT affiliates throughout the year. The training is tiered at 16-hour, 28-hour, and 40-hour levels. Tier 1: Conflict Management for Self-Reflection (16 hours)
Tier 1 consists of 16 hours of conflict management training for those interested in learning more about their own orientation towards and engagement with (or avoidance of) conflict. The sessions provide tools and practice for engaging in interpersonal interactions more efficiently and effectively. Topics include negotiation, active listening, receiving feedback, active bystanding, inter-cultural communication, and personal conflict styles.
Tier 2: Conflict Management for Coaching (12 additional hours; 28 hours total)
Conflict Management for Coaching, the second tier in the Conflict Management training, requires the successful completion of the entirety of Tier 1, and is an additional 12 hours of in-class time for participants who are in the role of supporting others through one-on-one interactions. Topics include conflict coaching, mindfulness, boundary-setting, as well as a module on privacy vs. confidentiality in one-on-one interactions.
Tier 3: Conflict Management for Advanced Practice (12 additional hours; 40 hours total)
Tier 3 is the entire 40-hour training, which includes Conflict Management for Self-Reflection and Conflict Management for Coaching, and adds an additional 12 hours of formal mediation instruction and practice. Participants will be coached throughout the Advanced Practice sessions by professional mediators and coaches.
After completion of each successive tier, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation in recognition of their efforts; those completing the 40-hour training will also receive a Mediation certificate. Please note that all Tiers take the training together in the same cohort. Participants may opt to take successive tiers at different times. There is no charge for current students; a fee applies to all faculty, staff, and others affiliated with MIT. Tuition reimbursement is available for MIT employees.
