The MIT Graduate Student Council (GSC) is in the process of recruiting graduate students to volunteer as mentors to incoming international graduate students. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, sign-up today! The deadline to sign-up as a mentor is Friday, August 16. The goal is to provide first year international graduate students an opportunity for cultural exchange, to learn more about Cambridge and Boston and the overall culture of MIT. You are supposed to answer questions about the area and provide your mentee with an opportunity to improve their language skills if needed. Should you decide to participate in the program, you have to be in e-mail contact with your mentee in late August.
During the fall orientation, the GSC asks all mentees and mentors to meet-up at the Mentorship Mixer on Saturday, August 31 from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in Morss Hall, Walker Memorial (50). This event will include international food, drinks and cultural performances. Each pair will determine the meeting schedule that works best for them, but we hope that each pair will meet once a month (especially in the first semester) including the August 31 Mixer and exchange a couple email or phone calls each month. The GSC will use the information that you provide to match-up mentees and mentors according to national/regional origins, mutual interests, and similar considerations. However, please note that they cannot guarantee that you will be matched with someone from the same country as you.
Due to our limited logistical resources, we may have to cap the number of mentor/mentee pairs at 150 (first come, first served). Please sign-up early to ensure your slot. If you are unable to access/complete the form from your current location, please email Ahamd Zubair or Saima Afroz Siddiqui and they will work to resolve this issue. Photo by MIT GSC.
