Graduate students Agata Wiśniowska (Health Sciences and Technology), Nirmala Paudel (Biological Engineering), Qinxian (Chelsea) He (Aeronautics and Astronautics), and Tea Zakula (Architecture) participated in the inaugural GYSS@one-north (Global Young Scientist Summit) program from January 20th through the 25th, 2013. The 5 day program addressed key areas of science & research, technology innovation & society and solutions to global challenges, and also brought together almost 300 PhD students and postdocs from around the world, along with 15 eminent speakers, recipients of the Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, and Millennium Technology Prize. The students were also able to meet with the President of Singapore, Tony Tan Keng Yam. Attendance to this summit was by invitation only.
The first three days of GYSS comprised lectures and plenary sessions with invited scientific leaders in the morning followed by informal small group interaction sessions and masterclasses with the speakers in the afternoon. Participants had the opportunity to visit the universities, research centers, and other research and technology highlights of Singapore in the final two days of the Summit. Cultural events were also organized for visitors to appreciate the sights, sounds and tastes of multicultural Singapore.
