Mechanical Engineering graduate student William J. Polachecka, supervised by Roger Kamm, Singapore Research Professor of Biological and Mechanical Engineering, was 1st author on a recent publication in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science (PNAS), “Interstitial flow influences direction of tumor cell migration through competing mechanisms.” This paper discovered that the direction in which fluid flows through bodily tissue determines how likely the cancer cells are to spread, or metastasize, and that, armed with that information, it may be possible to limit the spread of cancer.
